Rheinmetall and Lockheed Martin unveiled their Global Mobile Artillery Rocket System (GMARS) at the Eurosatory 2024 defense exhibition in Paris from June 17 to 21.
The showcased system was mounted on an 8×8 Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) HX2 truck platform, featuring a protected cabin accommodating two crew members, with space for a third if needed.
It includes a launcher capable of housing two missile pods and launching a variety of munitions, including the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), and several types of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles.
The configuration showcased at Eurosatory 2024 included GMLRS pods capable of firing up to 12 missiles.
Rheinmetall states that the GMARS system weighs less than 40 tons and can achieve road speeds of up to 100 km/h, covering a range of up to 700 km. Its dimensions are 2.5 m wide, 3.9 m high (with the missile pod stowed), and 9.8 m long. Notably, the truck does not feature outriggers.
GMARS utilizes common pods, ammunition, and a fire-control system shared with the High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and the M270A2.
Rheinmetall and Lockheed Martin joined forces in 2023 to combine their individual strengths and developed a GMARS as a solution for the growing demand for long-range rocket artillery.
