U.S. confirms deployment of MQ-9 Reaper Drones in South Korea

The U.S. military has confirmed the deployment of MQ-9 Reaper drones on the Korean Peninsula, announcing the official activation of an expeditionary reconnaissance squadron at Gunsan Air Base.

According to the U.S. Seventh Air Force, Lt. Col. Douglas J. Slater assumed command of the newly activated 431st Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron on Monday. While MQ-9 aircraft have previously been deployed to South Korea on a rotational basis, this marks the first time a dedicated squadron has been formally established in the country.

“MQ-9 operations will support U.S.-Korean priorities in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance across the Indo-Pacific theater enhancing the joint capability to respond to threats and emerging situations while strengthening our alliance,” the Seventh Air Force said in a statement.

The MQ-9, capable of both reconnaissance and strike missions, is designed for long-range operations. The aircraft is expected to conduct surveillance of North Korea and monitor Chinese activities in the Yellow Sea.

“Deploying the MQ-9 brings a powerful capability to the region,” Lt. Col. Slater said. “We’re here to support the mission, deepen cooperation, and demonstrate our shared commitment to maintaining security and stability across the Indo-Pacific.”
