General Atomics AeroTec Systems is positioning the DO228 NXT as a versatile, proven platform for both civil and military operators, building on more than four decades of operational experience worldwide. Based in Germany near Munich, the company is the manufacturer of the DO228 and provides a full range of related services, including maintenance, training, customer material support and engine overhaul.
Speaking to Defensehere.com, Martina Hierle, Program Manager of the DO228 NXT, highlighted the company’s focus on long-term operational support alongside aircraft manufacturing. “We are the manufacturer of the DO228, but we also provide the full range of related services, from maintenance and training to material support and engine overhaul,” she said.
The DO228 has accumulated extensive operational experience in some of the world’s most challenging environments. The aircraft has been deployed in desert regions as well as Arctic conditions, demonstrating its reliability and adaptability. This long-standing operational record was a key driver behind General Atomics’ decision to relaunch production with the updated DO228 NXT variant.
“The basic concept of this aircraft has been proven for more than 40 years. It is flying all over the world in very different environments,” Hierle explained.
Designed as a true multi-role platform, the DO228 supports a wide range of civil and military missions. These include passenger and cargo transport, medical evacuation, paratrooper operations and a variety of special missions. The aircraft is particularly well suited for the integration of mission systems such as radars, electro-optical turrets and different antenna configurations, enabling surveillance and specialized operational roles.
Performance and operational flexibility are key strengths of the platform. The DO228 is certified for short takeoff and landing (STOL) operations, allowing it to operate from short, unpaved runways, including grass and gravel surfaces. This capability makes it especially relevant for operations in remote or austere locations where infrastructure is limited.
