Fincantieri held the keel-laying ceremony for the Italian Navy’s second U212NFS submarine at its Muggiano shipyard. Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for 2030.
The company announced the milestone on October 1. The U212NFS, or Near Future Submarine, program covers the construction of four submarines and associated logistics support and is managed by the international defense procurement organization OCCAR.
According to Fincantieri, the class builds on the preceding U212A submarines with a greater proportion of Italian-developed technology and enhanced integration of onboard systems. Innovations include a lithium-ion propulsion battery and a new combat management system, which the company said are intended to improve stealth, endurance, efficiency and cyber resilience.
Fincantieri serves as the program’s design authority and prime contractor. The company also reported that recent contractual additions expanded activities covering new technological capabilities and integrated logistics support throughout the submarines’ lifecycle.
The second unit’s keel-laying marks a further construction milestone for the four-submarine program.
